Toby Wells YMCA

The Mission Valley YMCA announced earlier this summer that the Lloyd H. Wells Family, through the Toby Wells Foundation has donated $4 million for the construction of the new Toby Wells YMCA located on the former General Dynamics Missile Park site at 5105 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa. This is the largest gift in the history of the YMCA of San Diego County.

Toby Wells, was a young man who even in his early passing continues to make a difference. In a simple word, Toby cared. A young man of 28 Toby inspired others by uniting a team spirit with a dedicated alliance to both the immediate goal and overall vision. His enthusiastic work ethic and tireless commitment set the stage for a winning team, time and again. This young man was a natural and proven leader who's life demonstrated his priorities of family, caring deeply about people and animals, and the basic humanity in each of us. The Toby Wells YMCA is dedicated to both embracing and sharing Toby's compassion and leadership by making differences he recognized as important to our community.

We are hopeful that the Toby Wells YMCA will not only serve as a much deserved permanent tribute to a very caring and influential young man, but also make positive differences in the lives of many for generations to come," affirms Adrienne Wells Castaneda.

Scheduled to open in Spring 2005, this 45,000 square foot facility on a 6-acre park setting will be a satellite branch of the Mission Valley YMCA serving the communities of Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa. The Toby Wells YMCA will be an outreach partner with the Armed Services YMCA to serve military families and children in the area.

Membership to the Toby Wells YMCA will include access to the Mission Valley YMCA, the YMCA at Hazard Center and the Downtown YMCA facilities.

The new facility will include:

• Licensed Developmental Preschool for children ages 2-5
• 11,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art Gymnastics Center
• 6-lane Olympic size pool with covered sliding roof, water slide and Spa (McGrath Family Aquatics Center)
• Fitness Center outfitted with the latest cardiovascular and strength Training equipment
• Aerobics Studios offering group exercise and mind/body Programming
• Speed Soccer Arena
• ACA accredited Day Camps for children ages 6-16
• Climbing Tower
• Two playgrounds for ages 2-5 and 6-12
• Gymnasium
• Community Meeting Room
